The RGC Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 11 November, and we are proud to announce that Dr HUANG, Wendy Yajun (Associate Professor, SPEH) has been awarded the RGC Research Fellow Scheme (RFS) (2023/24) with the Project "Power the Movement to Get Kids Moving: Development and Evaluation of a Report Card on Active Healthy Lifestyle for the Early Years".

HKBU celebrates student athletes’ remarkable performance at Asian Games
Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held the “Cheers to HKBU Asian Games Athletes” reception today (3 November) to celebrate HKBU athletes’ achievements and remarkable performance at the Asian Games and Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou in September and October.
This year, HKBU athletes produced an impressive score sheet of one gold, two silver and four bronze medals in the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games. The medalists include Cheung Ka-long, a gold and bronze medallist in the Men’s Foil Individual and Team event respectively; Ma Kwan-ching, a silver medallist in the Women’s Windsurfing – iQFoil event; Ngan Wai-yan, a silver medallist in the Women’s RS:X Windsurfing event; Forrest Shanna Sanman, a bronze medallist in the Women’s Rugby Sevens; Wong Tsz-to, a bronze medallist in the Triathlon Mixed Relay event; and Chan Ho-yuen, who earned a bronze medal in the Men’s Singles WH2 Badminton event at the Asian Para Games. All of them are students of HKBU’s Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme.
HKBU alumni also shone at the Games. Ho Yuen-kei won a silver medal in the mixed BC3 Doubles Boccia event; and Wong Chun-yim secured a silver and a bronze medal in the Men’s Singles SH6 Badminton event and the Men’s Doubles SH6 Badminton event respectively.
At today’s reception, Dr Clement Chen, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, presented scholarships to the University’s medallists and participants of the Games totalling around HK$1.2 million in recognition of their exemplary performances.
In his welcome address, Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, said that: “HKBU had an unprecedented number of over 30 athletes participated in the Asian Games and Asian Para Games this time. They exhibited immense determination, gave their best, and fought hard in the competitions until the last moment, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship. Their efforts were inspiring and deserve our admiration.
“It is encouraging to see that the University's commitment to supporting elite athletes bears fruit. With the introduction of the ‘Talented Athletes Direct Admission Scheme’ as well as the learning and teaching support services provided by different units of the University, not only can our student athletes pursue academic studies while realising their full potentials in sports, they also play significant contributions to the sports scene in Hong Kong.”
Cheung Ka-long, Wong Tsz-to and Ho Yuen-kei were invited to share their inspiring journey to success at the Asian Games at the reception. The event also featured an array of engaging game booths which included a basketball shooting machine, a showcase of fencing equipment, a windsurfing balance game, and a rowing game. They enabled the attending students to immerse themselves in various sports experiences.
HKBU is committed to promoting the development of sports in Hong Kong and providing comprehensive support to Hong Kong athletes. Over the years, the University has been conducting sport science research, and it offers comprehensive and diversified sport science and management programmes to nurture sporting talent for Hong Kong. In 2016, the University established the Elite Athletes Admission Scheme (EAAS), and in 2022, it introduced the Talented Athletes Direct Admission Scheme (TADAS) in response to the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme (SALSA Scheme) launched by the University Grants Committee. These initiatives aim to provide flexible study arrangements for outstanding athletes in Hong Kong.

Two alumni named among Ten Outstanding Young Persons
Wilson Cheung and Ho Yuen-kei, an alumnus of the Bachelor of Physical Education and Recreation Management programme and alumna of the Bachelor of Social Sciences in China Studies programme respectively, have been named among the Ten Outstanding Young Persons this year in recognition of their extraordinary endeavours, remarkable achievements and strong fighting spirit.
From exploration to glacier research
Wilson Cheung is the world’s first Chinese polar expedition expert. He currently works at the Ice Climate and Environment Lab at Queen’s University in Canada. In partnership with Parks Canada, his research aims to assess multi-decadal glacier area and volume change using remote sensing techniques, and develop a sustainable, field-based glacier monitoring approach for the future.
Wilson has enjoyed exploring nature since childhood, having grown up in a rural area near Fanling. During his time at HKBU, he seized every opportunity to travel overseas and expand his horizons. He went to Antarctica for the first time in 2007 as a student on an expedition organised by an environmental group.
After graduating, he spent years exploring the world in various roles, including leading expeditions across the Arctic and Antarctic, and working as a mountain, ski and sea kayaking guide in the remote areas. He has also provided consultancy services for polar scientific research teams. To further his knowledge about the polar regions, he studied polar and marine science in Russia, followed by geosciences and glaciology in Germany.
Eager to raise environmental awareness, Wilson established Ecobus, a non-profit organisation that brings students to marine and country parks to learn conservation. He also co-founded the Asia Youth Alpine Mentors Program to train young people as alpinists and polar explorers.

Overcoming barriers with perseverance and positivity
Another awardee of this year’s Ten Outstanding Young Persons is alumna Ho Yuen-kei, a member of the Boccia Team of Hong Kong, China.
Yuen-kei was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a condition that makes walking difficult and leaves her more physically vulnerable than the average person. When she was in junior high school, she was introduced to the sport boccia, which has since become an indispensable part of her life. In 2008, she was inducted into the Hong Kong, China team. The next year, she represented Hong Kong, China for the first time in the Asian Youth Paralympic Games. In 2016, she achieved her dream of taking part in the Paralympics, and she was the first Hong Kong athlete to compete in the BC3 boccia classification, for athletes with significant limitations in their arms and legs. She also competed in the boccia competitions at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Yuen-kei is currently ranked first in the individual world rankings. Although her path to sporting success is not particularly smooth, she reminds herself to never give up in face of difficulties. Her motto is: “As long as you have the abilities, use them and do not limit yourself.” With her perseverance, optimism and positivity, she was selected by the Regeneration Society as one of its Regeneration Warriors 2015-2016, and she is always happy to share her own story to inspire others.
The Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection has been organised by the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong since 1970. The award recognises young people who excel in their professional endeavours and commitment to the community. It also promotes role models who shape a better future through their personal achievements as well as public services.

Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun PhD Student Research Excellence Awards 2023/24
Ms FENG Jie, a PhD student from the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health, has been honoured with the second prize of Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun PhD Student Research Excellence Awards (The Awards) in 2023/24.
The Awards, established with the generous support of the Madam Kwok Chung Po Fun Foundation, aim to acknowledge and reward research excellence and important research achievements of our PhD students. Each Faculty/School nominated a PhD student who has demonstrated exceptional research accomplishments and ability. The final score was determined by an 80% contribution from a panel assessment and a 20% contribution from the audience at the awards ceremony after the 3-minutes presentation conducted by each nominee on 5 October 2023.
